GAME 1 -
HOUSTON Cougars v PORTLAND Pilots
(10:00 a.m. HST) |
The Cougars
got out of the gates quickly and never looked back. This one was not close. |
Houston was up
13 at the half and promptly took the second half by 12 enroute to an 81-56
win and a berth into the semi-finals. |
|
GAME 2 -
GEORGIA TECH Yellow Jackets v BOISE STATE Broncos (12:00 p.m. HST) |
The Yellow
Jackets were down five at the half (31-26) but came back with a HUGE second
half (48-29) for a 74-60 win and the 2nd berth in semi-final #1. |
|
|
GAME 3 - BALL
STATE Cardinals v WASHINGTON Huskies
(4:30 p.m. HST) |
The Huskies
showed their #22 national ranking with steady and consistent game being up 11
at the half and 21 when it was over. |
Washington
advances to semi-final #2 with an 85-64 win. |
|
GAME 4 - UTEP
Miners v HAWAI'I Rainbow Warriors
(6:30 p.m. HST) |
The best game
of the night was the last one as the Rainbow Warriors delighted the home-town
fans with a 67-63 victory and in doing so earned the last semi-final berth. |
UTEP had a
strong first half and were up six at 37-31 only to see Hawai'i put together a
better second half of 36-26. Net
result… their eight win of the season. |
|
|
|
|
GAME 5 -
PORTLAND Pilots [Loser game 1] v BOISE STATE Broncos [Loser game 2] (11:30 a.m. HST) |
The Broncos
had two consistent halves to put way the Pilots. Boise State built their win with a 43-34
first half and a 42-35 second half. |
Boise State
will play the winner of Ball State/UTEP on Christmas Day. |
|
GAME 6 -
SEMI-FINAL #1 - HOUSTON Cougars
[Winner game 1] v GEORGIA TECH Yellow Jackets [Winner game 2] (2:00 p.m. HST) |
The Cougars
never trailed as they jumped out to a nine point lead at 10-1 in the first
3:26 and rode it from there. Half-time
was an 11-point lead at 43-32. |
The 2nd half
was just a matter of keeping the Yellow Jackets down and that's just what
Houston did. The 70-59 victory earns
the Cougs the first berth into the finals. |
Houston now
waits for the winner of the Washington/Hawai'i game to know who they will do
battle with in the Diamond Head Classic final on Christmas Day. |
|
GAME 7 -
SEMI-FINAL #2 - WASHINGTON Huskies
[Winner game 3] v HAWAI'I Rainbow Warriors [Winner game 4] (6:00 p.m. HST) |
Rainbow
Warriors are in tough and the #21 ranked Huskies defense made it a brutal
first half for Hawai'i as the Warriors shot a measly 7-31 (23%) which
includes a 1-14 (7%) from beyond the arc. |
Washington's
6' 9" freshman, and McDonald's All-American, Isaiah Stewart has proved
to be nightmare in the paint for Hawai'i and they seem to have no
answer. |
Stewart is
only 8-12 for a team high 16 points leading the Huskies to a 37-22 lead. |
Hawai'i came
out strong with an 8-0 run to start the second half. |
Teams going
back and forth but Hawai'i has climbed back into it as the Huskies have seen
their great first half lead dwindle to a mere six points with 9:25 to go. |
Valiant effort
but Washington was just too much for Hawai'i.
Hawai'i did string a few together near the end but it was too little
and too late. |
The Washington
Huskies advance, with a 72-61 victory, to the final and will take on the
Houston Cougars. |
|
GAME 8 - BALL
STATE Cardinals [Loser game 3] v UTEP Miners [Loser game 4] (8:30 p.m. HST) |
Good game for
the fans but sloppy with 39 turnover between the two teams. Ball State hit a trey at the buzzer to make
it a 1-point game. |
UTEP wins
71-70 and will play the Boise State Broncos in the consolation final on
Christmas Day. |
|
|
|
|
GAME 9 -
PORTLAND Pilots [Loser game 5] v BALL STATE Cardinals [Loser game 8] (8:30 a.m. HST) |
Not exactly a
great game. At the half the game was
tied at 19. First team to wake up
wins. Well, in the second half the
Cardinals shook off some of that sleepiness and put up 42 to Portland's 27. |
Net result was
as 61-46 win for Ball State. |
|
GAME 10 -
BOISE STATE Broncos [Winner game 5] v UTEP Miners [Winner game 8] (10:30 a.m. HST) |
Very
competitive game as Boise State was just a little bit better in both halves
and finished with a 72-67 win. |
|
|
GAME 11 -
GEORGIA TECH Yellow Jackets [Loser game 6] v HAWAI'I Rainbow Warriors [Loser
game 7] (1:30 p.m. HST) |
Hawai'i played
a solid first half and held a 32-29 lead but the Rainbow Warriors seemed to
forget that there were two halves in the game. |
The second
half was looking good as Hawai'I put up the first six points of the half but
then the drought happened. The Yellow
Jackets went on a 41-15 run and finsihed the second half of the game |
up 41-21. The final was 70-53 and the bronze medal
for Georgia Tech. |
|
GAME 12 -
HOUSTON Cougars [Winner game 6] v WASHINGTON Huskies [Winner game 7] (3:30 p.m. HST) |
Good game as
Houston upset the nationally #21 ranking Huskies of Washington 75-71. |
The big
difference in the game was that Houston had only seven turnovers compared to
the Huskies 15. |
